Are you fit enough?
ARE YOU FIT ENOUGH….?
The new government has been keen to show that it is a supporter of business, as one of the keys to economic growth and recovery across the country. One area which has recently been targeted is sick leave, and how this is managed.
Previously, where an employee was off sick for more than 7 days, they could contact their GP for a “sick note”, excusing them from work.
From 6 April 2010, this system has been replaced with the “Statement of Fitness to Work”, or “Fit Note”, as it is being referred to. This Fit Note shifts the focus from what the employee is unable to do, to what they are able to do.
GP’s will issue a Fit Note containing a statement to the effect that the employee “may be fit to work”, which will emphasise what the employee can do, given the appropriate support from the employer. It is hoped that this change of emphasis will encourage more people to return to work earlier, positively affecting the amount of time lost to UK business through long-term absenteeism.
Whilst the recommendations contained in the GP’s statement are not legally binding on employers, it may be a useful guide to encourage staff back to work sooner, and reduce unnecessary absence through sickness – as long as you can read the GP’s handwriting!
Employers should be warned, however, as the internet is awash with companies offering to provide “novelty” Fit Notes from as little as £9.99, with 1 site offering a “buy one, get one free” offer. Accept no imitations….
